NEW YORK—Today, the Supreme Court of the United States issued a rebuke against the Trump administration, denying its request to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census.

Following the announcement, Sayu Bhojwani, president and founder of New American Leaders, shared the following statement:

“When the Supreme Court says you shouldn’t do something, not even Donald Trump can ignore the decision.

“By sending the census citizenship question back to the lower courts, the Supreme Court recognized what we already knew—that Trump’s request was driven by nothing but bigotry, discrimination and a brazen attempt to gerrymander districts to maintain the status quo. Their decision means that people of color, immigrants and New Americans can continue the fight to have our voices heard and communities represented in 2020 and beyond.

“As we celebrate today’s decision, we also stand ready to keep fighting for a democracy that represents all Americans, and ensure that this is just the start of 2020 victories.”
