Our state legislatures have been designed to work for wealthy or retired individuals. The majority of states, including some of our most populated like Texas, guarantee neither a full-time job nor a full-time salary to their state legislators. Candidates face not just the cost of running for office, but also a cost to winning. Given the wealth gap in communities of color, one way to ensure that their voices are represented is to establish full-time legislatures, especially in our most populous states. That will ensure our leaders reflect our communities and allow for full-time representation for the states’ residents.
