Programs & Training

NALP works in partnership with state-based organizations to recruit leaders from immigrant communities to participate in our core 3-day training program Ready to Lead. This signature training curriculum identifies the immigrant experience as an asset in civic leadership. We train participants on messaging, targeting, and fundraising--and help them understand how to leverage their story and their community as assets to the political process.

Ready to Lead®

Our signature training program identifies the immigrant experience as an asset in civic leadership. The curriculum, specifically designed by immigrants for immigrants, shows trainees how to message, target, fundraise, embrace one’s heritage and become a successful candidate. Trainings are held regionally in the spring and summer. Applications and future training dates can be found here.

New American Fellows

NALP selects promising Ready to Lead® alumni with a high potential to run for office within two years for the New American Fellows program. The program supports leadership development through mentorship, political guidance, networking and additional skills building. Fellows go on to participate in NALP's advanced campaign training, Ready to Win. New American Fellows and Ready to Lead® alumni have continued on to run for School Board, City Council, Mayor, State Legislature, and Congress.

Ready to Win

Ready to Win is a unique two-track training for New American Fellows and colleagues who may serve as their campaign staff. During this “boot camp” style program, participants gain advanced campaign skills, develop a comprehensive campaign plan, and complete an intense campaign simulation, all to fully prepare them for the rigors of a campaign.

New American Leadership Academy

The Academy prepares newly elected immigrant officials to govern effectively with same community-based values on which they campaigned. The curriculum prepares these new leaders for the difficult task of navigating government, building coalitions and creating long lasting, innovative policies. The Academy also serves as a place to connect elected officials with their newly elected peers from across the country.

Power & Policy: New Americans in Elected Office

This is the only national conference for leaders already in elected office who are of Arab American, Asian Pacific Islander, Caribbean, African, Latino or other immigrant background. The event showcases successful legislative initiatives, offers opportunities for elected officials to network and further enhances leadership skills. The Power & Policy Awards Reception, which caps the event, honors outstanding New American leaders in public service.
